About the Walter Award

WHEN DID IT START?  In 2016, the first Walter was given to a teen book.  In 2018, the younger reader category was added.

WHAT BOOKS ARE ELIGIBLE? 

  • Diverse books written by a diverse author.
  • Diverse authors must be one of the following: Person of color, Native American, LGBTQIA, Person with a disability, or from a religion or culture that is a minority in the U.S.
  • Must be published in the year previous to the award date.
  • Teen award: for an audience of ages 13-18.
  • Younger Readers award: for an audience of ages 9-13.

WHAT ARE THE JUDGES LOOKING FOR?

Outstanding literature that addresses diversity in a meaningful way.
