About the Pennsylvania Young Readers Choice Award

WHEN DID IT START?  1992.  The first winning book for grades 6-8 was Maniac Magee, by Jerry Spinelli.

WHAT BOOKS ARE ELIGIBLE? 

  • Must be published within the 5 years previous to the award date.
  • Must be intended for students in one of the four defined age categories (K-3, 3-6, 6-8, 9-12).
  • Author must be from North America.

HOW ARE THE BOOKS NOMINATED?

  • Anyone may nominate an eligible title.
  • A committee of Pennsylvania school librarians select the final 15 nominated titles.

WHAT ARE THE JUDGES LOOKING FOR?

  • The judges are students from Pennsylvania.  Students may select their favorite book using whatever criteria they prefer.
